Culminating Blog: Reflection

This capstone project experience helped my critical thinking ability by making me think of ways to combine sounds from different instruments to make a beat, and also in writing lyrics that rhyme while at the same time telling a story. The project also helped my communication with new people as i had to find common ground and become comfortable working with my mentor. We needed to work together during many steps of this learning process and his help definitely made the process easier. Most importantly, it helped my creativity. Every part of this project came from my mind, my opinion. Every instrument heard, word spoken, all derived from my individual preference. It was an audio explanation of myself.

The capstone project brought me huge gains personally, socially and intellectually. Personally, i got to become more comfortable trying new things, exploring outside of my box. Socially, it benefited me in that i had to constantly express myself verbally to my mentor; telling him how i wanted it to sound, or what needed to be changed; and that was something i was not previously good at. The most significant gain for me was the intellectual gain. I got to learn about something that i had never done before but had always took interest in. I always enjoy the oppourtunity to expand my mind when its something i, myself, am intrigued by.

Some challenges i had throughout the project were getting used to the controls on programs i had never used before (Reason 4,0 & Logic Studio). Also another challenge was being able to communicate with my mentor without being able to explain the sounds that i wanted to hear. The toughest challenge was overcoming writers block when working on my 16 line verses. Though i use the word "challenges" none of these were too difficult to overcome. Once i began to not worry so much about messing up, i realized that my mentor was there to answer any question that i needed. I felt relieved knowing that he would let me do the work independtly, but still be there as a safety net if i had any questions that needed to be answered.

Overall, my project was a great experience. I enjoyed learning some steps of audio engineering, no matter how "beginner" they are. This is definitely a hobby that i will continue throughout college and hopefully one day can turn into a career or possibly a little side-hussle. My mentor was a huge help and was very reliable with meeting times and availability. The capstone was not nearly as bad as seniors worked it up to be, and im actually glad i experienced it.

The last meeting: May 2nd, 2014

May 2nd, 2014 was my last meeting with my mentor, well not really because i told him we'd still keep in contact as i would like to continue to learn about audio engineering. The final.part to our project was mixing the song to create the final product. This was by far the hardest part of the entire 25 hours. This is where you make the song official, make it how you want it to sound, cleaning up all the rought spots in your piece of work. When finished, we saved our work and began immediately on another beat. As i said, this was the last meeting for my hour requirements, but i will continue working with my mentor aside from school.

Recording and Track laying: May 1st, 2014

On May 1st, 2014 i recited both of my verses to my mentor. We changed some lines here and there, then he asked if i'd like to record it. The 1st couple of takes i kept messing up, but finally, after the 5th try we got it right. Once i had my voice recorded, we layed the track over the beat and he began to show me how to regulate my volume levels where at some points i was speaking to loud into the microphone. Now that im this deep into my project its becoming easier to use Logic Pro and its to a point where i barely need my mentors help while using the program.

16 Bars: April 30th, 2014

On April 30th, 2014 i did not physically meet with my mentor. Instead, i worked on writing my lyrics as he requested. At first the process was a little difficult, but once i got the ball rolling it juss came natural. I really enjoy writing lyrics, you can tell a story over a beat and make people relate to what your saying. I ended up writing two 16 bar verses. Im lookin forward to showing my mentor on May 1st @ our next meeting

Looping and Vocals: April 28th, 2014

Today, was by far the most fun meeting with my mentor thus far. First he took a listen to my finished beat and gave me feedback on it. After making some minor adjustments, he taught me how to loop the beat. This was the hardest part as you have to line up two different tracks at exactly the same spot. After looping, we began humming melodies to my beat. After choosing a desired melody, we ended the session with him giving me the take-home task of writing a 16 line verse and have it finished by our next meeting on Wednesday, April 30th, 2014.

Take Home Job: April 27th, 2014

Today i did not physically meet with my mentor. Instead, i continued to finish my beat at home, as he had asked of me. I added some piano notes and a few guitar chords to what was already a baseline and some percussion. Honestly, im enjoying making my own beat. I get to create a sound that i thought of, and i put together, all my ideas influenced by no one else. This is only the start to what seems to be a very intriguing senior capstone topic. Our next session is tomorrow, April 28th, 2014.

2nd Meeting : April 26th, 2014

Today, my mentor and i finished the introduction to both programs (Logic Studio Pro and Reason 4.0). After, the good part came, and now i have begun working on my first beat. He taught me how to begin with a baseline, then add more individual sounds by stacking the different tracks on top of each other. This has really sparked my interest in my topic now that i am actually working hands on, on my own piece of material. When our session was over, he told me to finish the beat and home and have it ready for him by our next meeting on Monday.

Downloading Software and Terminology; April 25, 2014

On Friday, April 25,2014 i met with my mentor and we started with downloading two softwares onto my computer. The 1st program was Reason 4.0 recording software and the other was a program called Logic Studio Pro. We opened both programs and he familiarized me with some basic terminology with a small introduction to each program. This 1st session was a little tedious as i am extremely impatient and wanted to start working with the software already, but overall I'm glad the process has started and am looking forward to actually putting the programs into use.  In our next meeting he will finish the introductory material and we will begin the initial steps into making a beat. We have planned to meet tomorrow at 3:30 pm to continue our sessions.
